Whaaaa?

http://www.autoblog.com/2014/01/14/che…

Introducing a ZR1 halo car above the upcoming Z06, which is due at the end of the year, would require significant investment in design, testing and certification – for negligible performance gains. It appears that Chevy is choosing to focus on the Z06 for now, and wait for the next great technological leap before investing in another ZR1.

Why is this surprising? They always tend to have gaps in the ZR1 package when they change up the new car.

This was my first thought upon seeing the Z06. The power numbers seemed to make a ZR1 redundant, and I guess I was right.

I think it will happen during the C7's lifespan, though.

They probably don't want to steal any attention from the new Z06/7

So I guess that mean the Z07 is the new ZR1?

This doesn't surprise me. If you look at Z06 sales after the introduction of the GS for the C6, they tanked. Those that wanted the look but didn't care as much for the big power went with the GS to save on cost. Those that wanted all the performance opted for the ZR1. What GM has effectively done here is to rename the ZR1 to the Z06 and dropped the mid-performance model

I would expect to see a "GS" like model in the next few years that combines a Stingray z51 with body options of the Z06 at a lower price point. I'm not certain you'll see a higher performing Corvette for this model. It's already going to stomp on all of it's competition as it is.

With performance numbers like these, it sounds like Chevy/GM are simply looking to get back to the Z06 being the halo car. And ignoring the ZR1. I see nothing wrong here, other than there not being a specific midlevel model, but lets be honest, the base C7 is pretty damn awesome, and the C7 Z06 appears to beat the outgoing ZR1. Perhaps they didn't want to get into the ludicrous territory that a range above their plans for a Z06 would get into.

I've been saying this all along. Not surprising given the current performance envelope the base car hits, the z06 performance put the nail in the zr1 coffin.

They have skipped generations with it in the past add well

The ZR1 will come in the end of the Z07 lifetime, i got a feeling for that.

Seriously, last gen ZR1 is badass. I love it!

The car has just come out now. If I were chevy, I'd try to bump the sales of the base model as much as I can before I bring out a ZR1 model the next year. Drop the news that you're doing a ZR1 later and keep the car in the news. So not too surprised really.

It's not really that surprising, but there's been a lot of speculation about it.

Add me to the list of people who saw the specs on the C7 Z06 and thought "so are they really going to do a ZR1 above this ?"

The big question mark on the C7 Z06 is price. Especially with the Z07 package with the carbon ceramic brakes, it's all of the equipment from the C6 ZR1. Is it going to be a $100k+ car like the C6 ZR1?

Yeah, there always is. That's why not making a new model can generate just as much buzz as making one.

I have a feeling cost might be an issue on this one too.

I didn't see any money figures on the new Z06 but I'm guessing it's at or above 100k.

If the ZR1 was produced and significantly better than the Z06 I think we'd be talking about 150k+ for a Corvette, I don't think Chevy wants to be in that game.

Good. ZR1 should not be in every generation. Hello C5.

Sing as how GM has made it public that they'd like to move Corvette up-market, waiting for something special to make a ZR-1 would fit right in with such a scheme because it would become an exclusivity item.
